Their review leaves a lot to be desired (way to vague), but their Spoiler FAQ is freakin' BRILLIANT!

In reality, the movie wasn't as bad as their review would have you believe and the winks & nods to existing Trek fans weren't as pervasive as indicated. The film makers just overstepped the bounds (significantly) during the Kirk death scene.

The first big offender was Getting a bit preachy and overly pointed (think about all those signs stating the obvious in the 1960's Batman TV show) by having Kirk say "I did what you'd do." followed by Spock's "And I did what you'd do..." Yeah, alright people got that already. And frankly didn't really care for it.

The second was Spock's mimicking Kirk's "Kaaaaaaaaaaahn!" Everyone saw that coming and was praying "No, please don't. Please, please, God no..." for almost a minute leading up to it. This should be taught in film schools everywhere as jumping the shark on "homage".

Insert Quota To Continue

Remember when New York's Finest were considered heroic?

The racism inherent with such quotas is deplorable, but that's just the tip of the iceberg -- the problem runs much, much deeper than that.

Consider the larger problem of a police state with no real crime to control so their agenda becomes harassing innocents to justify their own existence and justify needlessly growing their numbers.

This is a downward spiral that will not end well, but it's exacerbated by a political class using the police as revenue generators.

But no need to worry. The crappy beer is overflowing and college basketball is the priority. Stick those heads firmly in the sand and gulp, shitizens!

The road to hell is paved with good intentions like preventing stupid "disadvantaged" people from getting fat drinking soda. And because the sheeple bend over and take this back-door love on a regular basis, they've become more docile and accepting of incrementally more loss of dignity and rights.

What once seemed completely ludicrous fiction has now become calmly-accepted reality.

According to the LA Times article, the cops in question justify unloading 20-30 rounds on elderly Latino women thusly:

"As an officer, you look for cues. You know how someone drives normally and then you see someone coming at you slowly, driving in the middle of the street, stopping and starting. That can be misinterpreted."

So remember if you live in or visit the LA area, ensure you're never driving slowly and/or stopping & starting. That's clearly criminal behavior.

And if the Feds have their way it'll become defined as suspiciously "terroristic" in nature too, like most other previously-normal human behavior.

Weak Pointers

Why do software developers continue to invent solutions to problems that don't exist? Or worse, they create problems with programming practices that are fundamentally wrong and then invent/contrive "amazing" new "solutions" to those problems. One such example is "weak" pointers/references, which have a number of people trying to rationalize their existence.

They've invented a pointer/reference that can't directly be used because the object in question may or may not exist after instantiation. A lot more work for a lot less functionality: excellent!

Notice how they always give the example of wanting to extend a class with data members, but without sub-classing. How about just using the simple "composition" pattern? Why is it necessary to go thermonuclear and modify the language itself?

Also, once they start down the dark, hackish path, it always gets worse over time. So now instead of just following a simple convention to avoid memory leaks, you have to know about three or four different kinds of references and when to use or not use each one.

Moreover, they've gotten so lost in the woods they never solved the "problem" they set out to fix in the first place: memory leakage. It's still trivial to accidentally retain a reference in both C# and Java, but now you can also cause exceptions by dereferencing objects that seem to exist but don't.

Now they have a "hard" reference for you ancient geezers who just can't handle riding shotgun with the cool kids. They have "weak" references for people who don't know how to keep track of their own memory allocations. And now they've invented "soft" references for people who really loath deterministic behavior.

Progress!
